Obverse: above is Ukraine’s small coat of arms; in the center, surrounded by an old Rus ornament are the legends:  УКРАЇНА / 1 / ГРИВНЯ (UKRAINE/1/HRYVNIA), and the mint mark of the NBU Banknote Printing and Minting Works (to the right);beneath is the issue year – 2018. 

Reverse: there are an image of great Kyiv Prince Volodymyr the Great and a circular legend ВОЛОДИМИР ВЕЛИКИЙ (VOLODYMYR THE GREAT).

Coins of 1995 and1996 issues were minted at the Luhansk Machine Tool Plant (Ukraine).

Since 2001, coins have been minted at the NBU Banknote Printing and Minting Works.

1 hryvnia coin put into circulation on 12 March 1997

On the coin obverse there the Small Coat of Arms framed on both sides with an ornament of two oak leaves and two ears of wheat. Above the Coat of Arms there is the legend УКРАЇНА (UKRAINE) with the year of issue (1995, 1996, 2001, 2002, 2003) thereunder. Starting from 2001, the logo of the NBU Mint has been placed on the coin obverse. There is a prominent rim all over the perimeter. The images and legends are raised. The coin denomination is engraved in the centre of the reverse in the form of the figure 1 and the legend ГРИВНЯOn either side of the figure 1 there is the symmetrical ornament of conventionalized fronds. The legend ОДНА ГРИВНЯ (1 hryvnia) and the year of issue are separated by incised dots.

The 1 hryvnia circulation coin "Volodymyr the Great" is dedicated to Grand Kyiv Duke and public figure Volodymyr the Great during whose rule the formation of the ancient Rus-State was accomplished and Christianity as a state religion was introduced.

The 1 hryvnia circulation coin “60 Years of Liberation of Ukraine from Fascists Invaders” is dedicated to 60 years of liberation of Ukraine from Fascists Invaders, participants of 1941-1945 operations, veterans of labor front and memory of those killed in the fight against fascism.

The 1 hryvnia circulation coin “60 Years of Victory in the World War II" is dedicated to 60th anniversary of the Victory in the Second World War.

The 1 hryvnia circulation coin “65 Years of Victory in the World War II" is dedicated to 65th anniversary of the Victory in the Second World War, liberation of Ukraine from Fascists Invaders, participants of 1941-1945 operations, veterans of labor front and memory of those killed in the fight against fascism.

The 1 hryvnia circulation coin "UEFA Euro 2012TM Final Tournament" is dedicated to an important sporting event - the final tournament of the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship - to be hosted by Poland and Ukraine in 2012. The coin is an officially licensed product of UEFA Euro 2012™.

The obverse of all coins is uniform. At the top of there is the Small Coat of Arms and the issue year thereunder. Within the frame of an old-rus ornament pattern there is a a three-line inscription УКРАЇНА / 1 / ГРИВНЯ (UKRAINE/ 1 /HRYVNIA) and the logo of the National Bank of Ukraine Mint. 

On the reverse of the 1 hryvnia circulation coin "Volodymyr the Great" there is depicted Duke Volodymyr the Great holding a cross in his right hand and a conventionalized depiction of the Tithe Church in his left hand, as well as the circular inscription: ВОЛОДИМИР ВЕЛИКИЙ (Volodymyr the Great).

On the reverse of the 1 hryvnia circulation coin “60 Years of Liberation of Ukraine from Fascists Invaders” there is the inscription 60 РОКІВ ВИЗВОЛЕННЯ УКРАЇНИ ВІД ФАШИСТСЬКИХ ЗАГАРБНИКІВ (60 Years of Liberation of Ukraine from Fascists Invaders) and a lapel of a Second World War veteran’s jacket with decorations.

On the reverse of the 1 hryvnia circulation coin “60 Years of Victory in the World War II" in the segment circumscribed by the three searchlight beams there are soldiers returning from the front. To the left there is the inscription: 60/ РОКІВ / ПЕРЕМОГИ / У ВЕЛИКІЙ / ВІТЧИЗНЯНІЙ / ВІЙНІ / 1941 – 1945 (60/ years / of / victory /in the World/War II/1941-1945.

On the reverse of the 1 hryvnia circulation coin “65 Years of Victory in the World War II" above there is depicted the Great Patriotic War order, on both sides there are the dates 1945 – 2010; in the middle of the coin there are inscriptions: 65 РОКІВ / ПЕРЕМОГИ (65/ YEARS/ OF THE VICTORY), with the Ribbon of the Order of Glory and two carnations near the Eternal flame thereunder.

On the reverse of the 1 hryvnia circulation coin “UEFA Euro 2012TM Final Tournament" in the outer circle there is the circumferential legend ФІНАЛЬНИЙ ТУРНІР ЧЕМПІОНАТУ ЄВРОПИ З ФУТБОЛУ 2012 р. (Final tournament of the championship of Europe / of football / 2012 year); in the centre there is the image of the official UEFA Euro 2012 logo with the inscriptions thereunder: UEFA/EURO 2012™/POLAND-UKRAINE.

The legend ОДНА ГРИВНЯ (1 hryvnia) and the year of issue are separated by incised dots. There is a prominent rim all over perimeter. The images and legends on the obverse and reverse of the coins are raised.
